Brief description of the Unit

This course examines the role of knowledge experts in disciplinary fields and professions. To become successful graduate professionals, students need to understand the fundamentals of a society shaped through knowledge. As future participants in a variety of professions, graduates will be required to contribute to their professional field in the creation, communication, evaluation and use of knowledge daily. Acting ethically, equitably, compassionately and with integrity in the handling of information is emphasised. The course contextualises the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values required for success in the post-tertiary professional workplace and the importance of becoming a curious, reflective and critical evaluator of information.

Unit Content:

This course will explore the role and responsibilities of a professional in a knowledge-based workforce. The importance of understanding influences on the development of knowledge and professions is explored alongside a range of factors that can impact knowledge. Professional skills, values and qualities such as critical evaluation of knowledge and reflective practice are explored. Content covered will include: becoming a graduate professional; knowledge production, communication, evaluation and use; the changing nature of knowledge; truth, trust and the post-truth era; the role of experts; ethics and accountability; professional identity; conflicts and controversies in knowledge; professionals of the future.
