Brief description of the Unit |
This unit provides students in the final year of the Bachelor of Arts degree with the opportunity to plan and undertake a sustained project enabling them to engage in depth with a topic, issue or problem relevant to their major. In consultation with the unit coordinator and under the guidance of an academic supervisor, students will work independently or in a small group to plan and conduct a research project, creative project or community project. Students will also attend seminars designed to support them to plan and complete their project. This unit is strongly recommended for students wishing to go on to further study at Honours level but open to any final year student with a desire to engage in self-directed learning. Please note: all students are required to contact their Course Coordinator for approval prior to enrolling in this unit. |

Unit Content: |
Project topics will be developed by negotiation with the course coordinator and project supervisor. Seminar topics may include those listed below. - Formulating a topic;
- Project planning and time management;
- Advanced information literacy — literature searches and critically evaluating sources;
- Types of research — quantitative, qualitative, empirical, theoretical;
- Intellectual integrity — copyright, ethics, referencing;
- Academic writing — planning, drafting and editing;
- The role of the exegesis in creative projects.
