Brief description of the Unit

This unit examines the major theoretical developments in the production and construction of literature across history. As such, it concentrates on the most significant and innovative literary and cultural movements pertaining to a range of literary texts. The unit develops an understanding of how literary texts may be seen as both products of history and as a means for exploring human experience in all its diversity. It further considers how each major literary movement signalled a significant break with past traditions, world views and values, and explores the ways in which these schisms affected the form and content of literature.

•Major social and cultural movements across history: Renaissance, Reformation, Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Modernism, Postmodernism
•Major literary movements across history: Renaissance drama, Enlightenment reason and the rise of the novel; Bourgeois realism and the realist novel; Romanticism and the importance of poetry; Modernism; and Postmodernism
•Major works representative of the various periods and movements covered
