Brief description of the Unit

The unit introduces students to the management of business risk through understanding concepts relevant to business law. Students gain an understanding of Australian law and areas of law relevant to business including contract law and the law of torts (negligence). In addition, students will develop an understanding of the business structures available for business activities. Through developing an understanding of these topic areas, students will learn to manage business risk and develop the ability to apply business law concepts to practical situations using legal writing and legal problem-solving.

Unit Content:

Topics may include:
1. The Australian legal system, legal terminology, and principles
2. Introduction to business organisations (such as sole traders, partnerships, corporations, trusts, agencies, joint ventures, and incorporated associations) and the underlying regulation of those structures
3. Introduction to contract - specifically creation, electronic dealings, terms, misstatements, and remedies for breach
4. Principles of the law of torts (negligence)
