Brief description of the Unit

This course examines both private and public international law as it relates to world trade, and as such the following: (i) principles of private international law as they relate to contracts, negotiable instruments and international monetary obligations; (ii) principles governing international commercial arbitration; (iii) evolution of free trade obligations as multilateral and bilateral treaty norms, and in particular under the multilateral agreements of the World Trade Organization framework and bilateral free trade agreements to which Australia is a party; (iv) protection of investments under treaty norms including the emergence of investor-state dispute mechanisms.
