Brief description of the Unit

The course introduces the essential concepts, tools and techniques relevant to project management. The course content covers the broad perspectives of managerial skills and technical knowledge required to initiate, implement, and evaluate successful projects. These perspectives include strategic planning, financial control, human resource management, and project evaluation. Throughout the course, the application of relevant information technology and the pursuit of quality outcomes underpin and reinforce these perspectives. The course, suitable for students from all disciplines, comprises technical and human processes required for managing projects typically undertaken by small and medium organisations or community groups although key principles introduced apply to projects at any scale. The course provides a foundation for developing relevant knowledge, skills and applications practised by project managers.

Unit Content:

The course defines projects, portrays the project lifecycle and identifies how projects are used meet organisational objectives. The role of the project leader and project team is outlined. The course covers standard project planning techniques including setting objectives, budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. The role of control and monitoring systems are described with a specific focus on quality management. The course concludes with a review of methods for project evaluation and termination.
