Brief description of the Unit

This Clinical Diagnostic & Practice unit will build upon and extend knowledge and skills developed in first semester clinical units. In conjunction with Clinical Paramedicine 2 this unit develops students’ understanding of pre-hospital care to the Advanced Life Support level. The learning in this unit focuses on the paediatric patient and the relevant guidelines. It also looks at environmental issues effecting patient health, as well as the impact of drug overdose. This unit looks at the ambulance treatment of endocrine emergencies as well as the fitting patient. Sepsis and autonomic dysreflexia will also be examined in the pre-hospital setting

Grade Scheme: Graded (HD, D, C, P, MF, F, XF)
Work Experience Indicator:

Unit Content:

This unit is designed to build upon and extend knowledge and practical skills developed in Clinical Diagnostics 1. This unit is closely interrelated with Clinical Paramedicine 2 and will help develop the participant’s understanding of pre-hospital care to Advanced Life Support (ALS) level. While undertaking this unit the participant will explore Paramedic care models and the practice of Paramedicine. This will include paediatric, environmental and medical emergencies  The management and pharmacology outlined in the clinical practice guidelines will form the foundation of this learning. Utilising problem-based scenarios the participants will apply evidence-based practice to manage various medical emergencies. Throughout the unit a problem-based learning model will be used and the participant will be expected to develop critical thinking processes. Students will have the opportunity to convert theory into practice with an introduction to Work Integrated Learning in an emergency ambulance service
