Brief description of the Unit

The purpose of this unit is to prepare the post-registration nurse for clinical practice with an in depth understanding of advanced human pathophysiology of major body systems and their subsequent alterations. Building upon an existing knowledge of physiology, this unit will provide nurses with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of clinical manifestations arising in acute care settings. A focus will be on core concepts of the deteriorating patient, and exploration of physiological responses to compromised functioning.

Unit Content:

Topics in this unit may include:
• The transition of normal cellular function to altered cellular function in specific disease states.
• Compensatory mechanisms of cellular function during physiological alteration at a cellular and systematic level.
• Pathophysiology of disease states attributed to major body systems.
• Exploration of aetiological factors and clinical manifestations attributed to altered pathophysiological states of major body systems.
