Brief description of the Unit |
This unit introduces students to the theory and practice of quantitative and mixed methods research, with a focus on their application in the health sciences. Students will develop a strong foundation in core quantitative methods and techniques, including descriptive and inferential statistics. Through exploration of quantitative and mixed methods approaches, students will learn to identify appropriate research designs and apply statistical principles to real-world research contexts. |
Grade Scheme: | Graded (HD, D, C, P, MF, F, XF) |

Learning Outcomes: |
Knowledge: |
K1. | Recognize the key quantitative and mixed methods paradigms and core philosophical principles that are common to quantitative and mixed methods research. |
K2. | Evaluate whether your research question aligns with a quantitative or mixed methods paradigm and assess its consistency with the chosen philosophical standpoint. |
K3. | Examine the principles of reliability and validity in quantitative and mixed methods research and justify how they are ensured through research design. |
Skills: |
S1. | Critically examine the methodologies associated commonly with the quantitative and mixed methods research paradigms |
S2. | Suggest and justify specific quantitative or mixed method research strategies that match your research question. |
S3. | Design a research tool that effectively addresses your research question and defend its appropriateness for your study. |
S4. | Assess the ethical considerations of your research design and propose strategies to mitigate potential challenges. |
Application of knowledge and skills: |
A1. | Demonstrate the philosophical foundations of quantitative or mixed methods research by articulating them clearly and coherently. |
A2. | Critically evaluate quantitative or mixed methods research paradigms and ethical considerations to design and implement an appropriate data collection technique that effectively addresses your research question. |
