Brief description of the Unit

This course will draw upon the principles of Quality Use of Medicines for safe and effective prescribing. The course will prepare the student for the management of medications including legal and ethical principles whilst providing care for people from a variety of economic and social environments together with consideration for cultural diversity and care across the life span. Students are required to maintain a portfolio (log) of their reflections on professional knowledge, practice developments and collaborative practice.

Unit Content:

The ANMAC Nurse Practitioner Accreditation Standards (2015); The NMBA Nurse Practitioner  Standards for Practice (2021); NMBA Code of Conduct for Nurses (2018) and Code of Ethics for Nurses (2018), Safety and Quality Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner (2021); National Safety and Quality Health Service (NSQHS) Standards (2017-19); Aged Care Quality Standards (2021), National Digital Health Framework (2021; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Curriculum Framework (2020) and National Prescribing Competencies Framework (2021) have substantially informed the syllabus/content of this course.

1.Quality use of medicines framework and the NPS Medicinewise Prescribing Competencies Framework (2021)

2.Professional integrity and ethical conduct in relation to prescribing pharmaceuticals including Code of Ethics for Nurses and the NMBA Ethical Decision-making framework

3.Legislation informing quality and safe use of medicines

4.Legal requirements for reporting adverse effects and/or harm

5.Drug information resources to inform evidence for medication selection, safety issues and comprehensive updates

6.Prescription writing within scope of practice, institutional guidelines and law

7.Use of digital technologies in prescribing practice
