Brief description of the Unit

This unit enables students to develop a critical understanding of the major research and industrial directions, literature searching methodologies, information sources and multi- disciplinary research approaches shaping contemporary research and debates applicable to the field of occupational health and safety. Students will build, apply and reflect on a range of research strategies and independent research skills to locate, retrieve, store and critically analyse, evaluate and use information effectively for research.

• Who does research in occupational health and safety and why;

• What is evidence-based practice and its value;

• The field of occupational health and safety research;

• The connections with and contributions of occupational health and safety knowledge to other disciplines, fields of research and professional practice; and

• Current occupational health and safety preoccupations and related contextual influences.

• Contemporary research practices with reflections on the role of the researcher; and what constitutes effective research.

• Identifying a research focus, begin to develop effective strategies for: research, information literacy and literature reviews.
