Brief description of the Unit

This unit will explore women’s health issues across the life span, including the impacts associated with pregnancy and childbirth. Knowledge and clinical skills related to women’s health and gynaecological care will be developed, along with an understanding of gender as a health determinant. There will be an emphasis on the importance of holistic care for women by collaborating effectively with interdisciplinary teams across diverse settings. It will focus on critically appraising current research and advancements in women’s health to inform clinical practice. Students will gain a strengths-based understanding of the physiological and psychological changes throughout a woman's lifespan, specific LGBTQIA+ health considerations, management of common gynaecological conditions, menopause, and the integration of sexual and reproductive health knowledge. Additionally, the unit will address the impact of sociocultural factors on healthcare access and the significance of exercise and modifiable lifestyle factors in promoting overall health.

Unit Content:

The ANMAC National Accreditation Standards for the Midwife (2021); NMBA Midwife Standards for Practice (2018); NMBA Code of Conduct for the Midwife (2018); and the NMBA Code of Ethics for the Midwife (2014) have substantially informed the syllabus/content of this unit

·        Common gynaecological conditions and diseases

·        Comprehensive health assessments for women

·        Care of women undergoing gynaecological surgical procedures or medical management of reproductive conditions

·        Sociocultural factors affecting women's health

·        Exercise and modifiable lifestyle factors for women's health

·        Interdisciplinary collaboration for holistic care

·        Current research and advancements in women’s health

· Application of sexual and reproductive health knowledge as strategies to address Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 5.6
