Brief description of the Unit |
Perinatal and infant mental health is an interdisciplinary field focused on parent wellbeing and the social, emotional, and cognitive development of infants from birth to three years. This unit provides foundational knowledge around common perinatal mental health challenges, experienced by women and their infant, as well as explores the significant role that the midwife has in supporting the psychosocial wellbeing of the dyad. Students will develop midwifery knowledge and skills in identifying risk factors, screening, treatment options and the impact on women and their families. Students will develop communication skills to establish effective therapeutic relationships with women while collaborating appropriately with the multidisciplinary team. Students will also acknowledge the legal and ethical responsibilities of the midwife, including protecting the rights, dignity and autonomy of women experiencing a mental illness. |
