Brief description of the Unit |
This unit provides students with the knowledge to assist with advancing their midwifery practice in the clinical setting. The focus of this unit will explore the skills and attributes required for leadership in midwifery practice and maternity care settings, in order to provide effective delivery of women-centred care during the childbearing continuum. It will also examine the important role of the midwife in the context of global health targets and strategies, to improve birth outcomes for women and their newborns. Students will investigate innovative ways to work in collaboration with women, families, and the multidisciplinary team, including how digital literacy enables midwives to attain skills and knowledge for the use of technology and devices in contemporary health care settings |

Unit Content: |
The ANMAC National Accreditation Standards for the Midwife (2021); NMBA National Competency Standards for the Midwife (2018); NMBA Code of Professional Conduct for the Midwife (2018) and International Code of Ethics for the Midwife (2014) have substantially informed the syllabus/content of this unit. This unit will introduce the student to the following topics; Module and learning outcomes and Content Module 1: Midwifery leadership K1, S1, S2, A3 - Concept of midwifery leadership
- The role of leadership in professional and personal advancement
- Ethical situational leadership and teaching principles
- The midwife as an advocate
- Assertive communication skills
- Advancing the role of the midwife in multidiscipline teams
Module 2: Advancing practice S1, S2, A1, A2, A3 - Professional development and lifelong learning
- Learning and teaching strategy and rationale
- Context of emotional learning in clinical environments
