Brief description of the Unit

This unit integrates several core biological disciplines, including physiology, developmental biology, histology, physics and the broader biological sciences, offering a connected, applied and contemporary curriculum that supports students to synthesise knowledge across disciplines and develop relevant, real-world skills. Central to this approach is a strong emphasis on interactive, hands-on laboratories.

Describe and explain the processes of cell division, differentiation, migration, and cell death, and how these underpin tissue formation and homeostasis

Explain how cells maintain internal stability through membrane structure, transport mechanisms, signalling pathways, and bioelectric properties

Apply simple conceptual and quantitative models (e.g., diffusion, osmosis, electrochemical gradients, signalling pathways) to predict cellular behaviour under varying physiological conditions

Relate cellular structure and function to the organisation of tissues and organs, recognising how coordinated cellular activity underpins human body systems
