Brief description of the Unit

This unit covers knowledge and skills applicable to an understanding of the equitable distribution of water resources and the challenges of managing water for both human and environmental systems. Content includes: wetland form and function; impacts of a changing climate; monitoring water quality; wetland ecology; wetland chemistry; and social, cultural, political and legal dimensions to water resource management.

Grade Scheme: Graded (HD, D, C, P, MF, F, XF)

Unit Content:

This unit provides an in depth investigation of climate patterns, water catchments, and the variability of the nature of wetlands and the availability and quality of water resources over space and time. These fundamental principles will be employed to examine contemporary issues in water resources such as environmental and cultural flows, wetland reserves, water allocations and the impact of a changing climate, drawing on examples from Australia and elsewhere. The unit will also include practical field and laboratory experience in wetland assessment.
Topics may include:
1. Wetland form and function
2. Wetland ecology
3. Wetland chemistry
4. Water quality and bioassessment techniques
5. Changes and impacts to water catchments

Graduate Attributes:
Federation University recognises that students require key transferable employability skills to prepare them for their future workplace and society. FEDTASKS (Transferable Attributes Skills and Knowledge) provide a targeted focus on five key transferable Attributes, Skills, and Knowledge that are be embedded within curriculum, developed gradually towards successful measures and interlinked with cross-discipline and Co-operative Learning opportunities. One or more FEDTASK, transferable Attributes, Skills or Knowledge must be evident in the specified learning outcomes and assessment for each FedUni Unit, and all must be directly assessed in each Course.
