Brief description of the Unit

The unit is dedicated to producing a broad literature review for the research topic of the student`s honours course. The broad literature review will support homing in on their research focus area that will support their overarching research output. A comprehensive review and appraisal of relevant literature will provide the background information needed to understand the chosen honours research project. Preparing a literature review is an important component of the honours course and can assist students to prepare a well-organized thesis with a clear conceptual framework. This unit aims to build varied communication skills relevant to Honours Courses including written, verbal, presentation, networking and dissemination skills.

Honours Thesis Format and Style

  • Discipline-specific structures and style for honours thesis and creative outputs towards the creation of new knowledge (e.g., abstract, methods, results).
  • Academic or professional tone and consistent referencing and acknowledgement of resources towards creation of output (discipline related).
  • Academic and discipline-industry expectations of thesis format and styling.

 

Literature Review

  • Difference between types of literature reviews, such as narrative, systematic, meta-analytic, and thematic related to key discipline.
  • Sourcing, evaluating and synthesizing relevant literature and resources.
  • Developing critical, well-structured, and evidence-based reviews relevant to the research/discipline field. 
  • The role of bibliographies within varied disciplines and 'standing on the shoulders of giants'.

 

Developing Research Outputs and Communication Strategies

  • The role and relevance of varied communication skills aligned to best practice dissemination and/or creative outputs, such as journal articles, conference papers, technical reports, or creative works and identify those specific to your discipline
