Brief description of the Unit

Pharmacology is the study of drugs and how they work and has its roots in therapeutics, which aims to reduce the adverse effects of disease. Drug action can only be understood in the context of what else is happening in the body. Consequently this unit will require you to draw on the knowledge you bring from previous study of pathophysiology, immunology and genomics. Therapeutics have a high rate of obsolescence, so particular attention in this unit is devoted to an appreciation of mechanisms of action of drug classes and in arming you with the basic knowledge and know-how that you will require to keep up with this rapidly changing field.

Unit Content:

This unit introduces fundamental concepts and knowledge in pharmacology and toxicology. There is an emphasis on molecular and cellular effects of drugs, drug targets, mechanisms of action and drug-receptor interactions. Examples are drawn from drugs affecting the immune system, the heart and vascular system, nervous system and other organ systems. Unwanted side-effects, drug toxicity and safety are considered in the context of mechanisms of drug action, time and dose-dependent factors determining drug action and efficacy and the importance of measurement and experimentation in pharmacology.

Graduate Attributes:
Federation University recognises that students require key transferable employability skills to prepare them for their future workplace and society. FEDTASKS (Transferable Attributes Skills and Knowledge) provide a targeted focus on five key transferable Attributes, Skills, and Knowledge that are be embedded within curriculum, developed gradually towards successful measures and interlinked with cross-discipline and Co-operative Learning opportunities. One or more FEDTASK, transferable Attributes, Skills or Knowledge must be evident in the specified learning outcomes and assessment for each FedUni Unit, and all must be directly assessed in each Course.
