This unit looks at the impact of human activity on the Earth. It addresses, in turn, the major components of the habitable planet and explores the fundamental natural processes that shape and sustain them. The unit emphasises that environmental sustainability requires an understanding not only of the natural processes operating today, but also of the rate, sequence, and nature of environmental change through recent geological and human history. Furthermore, achieving sustainable outcomes also demands consideration of social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions that shape environmental decision-making and responses to global change. The unit provides an opportunity to critically evaluate humanity's relationship with the environment and plan for a more sustainable, equitable and regenerative future. The unit also equips students with knowledge and skills in developing solutions, and emphasising sustainable development through effective policies, legal frameworks, and conservation practices. Assessment tasks may require students to work individually or as part of a group. Attendance may be required to complete assessment tasks and/or field and laboratory based activities. |
